How the process is built
Amazon runs one of the most standardised hiring processes of any large employer. Operations and warehouse roles typically involve an online application, a short assessment and a hiring event or phone screen. Corporate and support roles add a recruiter call and a panel loop. The panel is deliberately consistent: each interviewer is assigned specific Leadership Principles and scores you against them independently.
The Leadership Principles that come up most
You will not be asked about all of them. In practice a small set dominates entry-level and support loops, and preparing two stories for each covers the majority of questions.
- Customer Obsession — a time you put a customer's outcome ahead of convenience.
- Ownership — a time you fixed something that was not formally your job.
- Bias for Action — a decision you made without complete information.
- Deliver Results — a target you hit under pressure or constraint.
- Earn Trust — feedback you received badly at first and then acted on.
Answer in STAR, and finish with the number
Amazon interviewers take notes in STAR format, so give them the structure directly: Situation, Task, Action, Result. Spend most of your time on Action, described in the first person singular — 'I' rather than 'we'. Always land on a result, and quantify it even roughly. An answer without a result reads as unfinished no matter how good the story is.
Preparing for warehouse and delivery roles
Operational roles are assessed far more on reliability, safety awareness and shift flexibility than on interview polish. Come prepared to talk plainly about your availability, your ability to be on time consistently, and how you handle physically demanding, repetitive work. Mentioning safety unprompted — checking equipment, reporting hazards — is one of the strongest signals you can send.
Questions worth asking back
Interviews are scored partly on engagement. Have three specific questions ready.
- What separates someone who is doing well at six months from someone who is struggling?
- How does the team measure success week to week?
- What does the training schedule look like for the first month?
After the interview
Send a short thank-you within 24 hours that references one specific thing you discussed. If you are declined, Amazon will typically allow you to reapply after a cooling-off period, and candidates who apply again with a rewritten set of STAR stories do materially better the second time.
